In a free-wheeling chat with TWF correspondent Vickey Lalwani, Zayed Khan talks about his new film ‘Rocky - The Rebel’ and says he has contributed to its script as well.

Q: Tell us about your new release ‘Rocky- The Rebel’?
A: The film is very close to my heart and may I add that it is in no way related to the Sanjay Dutt movie by the same name. ‘Rocky- The Rebel’ is a tale of a youngster (Zayed) going through turbulent times and the questions he asks society about truth, morality and justice. He wants things around him to improve.

And when that doesn’t seem to happen inspite of all his earnest ways, he only had one option that remained. Turn into a rebel with a cause. As a result, the relationship between Rocky and his father deteriorates. Please don’t ask me more. It will give everything away.

Q: There’s one very dangerous scene you’ve done in ‘Rocky- The Rebel’?
A: The scene in question is the opening shot of the film, precisely a song, wherein Zayed stands on the parapet of the top floor of a 40-storey building under construction. Producer Shyam Bajaj could easily have employed a double but I insisted that I wanted to do the shot himself. The shot was filmed in Hiranandani Complex, Powai. Buzz is, Shiny Ahuja has joined Zayed Khan to star in Meghna Gulzar’s next film ‘Bread Butter and Cash’. Sanjay Gupta is producing the film under the banner of White Feather Films.

Ahuja says that though he is cast opposite Khan, who is a commercial actor, unlike himself, he will still put his best forward. That’s the spirit, Shiny!

Well, when you have a pair like Bipasha and Zayed endorsing a brand, the fashion has to be fresh. Zayed has previously endorsed brands like Mirinda and Bipasha was last seen in the Clinic All Clear ad. Well, let us hope we will get to see this beautiful pair together someday in a movie too.

What brings on this new power-packed Zayed Khan?

Whenever people tell me I can’t do it, I become even more determined. As a child if my parents said- don’t go out, I did. My family has provided me with unconditional moral and emotional support. I exist in never-say-die surroundings. My mom always says, one has to keep creating opportunities regardless of what people say. I ignored cynics and just kept working. People said I shouldn’t do solo-hero films. But here I am ready with another solo-hero film Rocky. I feel I’ve come a full circle since my debut in Chura Liya Hai Tumne.

How did you overlook the cynicism about your prospects?

I’ve always been confident about myself. My goals are very focused and real. I’ve really avoided all negativity. I just wanted to be one of the best, and that’s what I’m working towards. No one comes to the industry to be the second-best.There’s no pressure from my family. I’ve been working with the best talents in the business like Shah Rukh Khan, Farah Khan, Anubhav Sinha, Sanjay Dutt.I don’t know whether I deserve their support. But I was a very obedient person. And followed the whole senior-junior thing which is very important in the industry.I’m still defiant, but not so aggressively as in the past.

You must have been the spoilt son in a family filled with daughters.

Zayed Khan’s solo starrer ‘Rocky - The Rebel’ was supposed to release last week but owing to KANK occupying the majority of theatre screens; it had to be postponed to a latter day. The producers were contemplating a delay of a fortnight or 3 weeks but unfortunately the film couldn’t arrive on theatres even last Friday.

The publicity of the film had just reached its crescendo with the talkie promos arriving but then they were stopped from being aired as the film got delayed. Meanwhile the songs from the film have met with a reasonable response and are helping the film to hold on to the steam for at least some more time to come.

Now if everything goes as per the plan, ‘Rocky - The Rebel’ would finally be arriving on September 22. Well, it should better arrive on that day because 29th already has ‘Woh Lamhe’, ‘Zindaggi Rocks’ and ‘Krishna’ lined up while after that the ’shraddh’ period begins which has traditionally been avoided by film makers for any release.
